Absolutely - while psychedelics can bring us wonderful insights, using them constantly to control our mood feels sort of... dystopian to me (well, this is what happens in Brave New World with 'soma'). Your points about the 9-5, "productivity" culture demanding constant happiness are exactly what I came to realise too - capitalism doesn't have time for us to sit around feeling grief and sadness about the fact that we're destroying our planet. The political system doesn't want us to feel rage about the inequality and corruption. And as long as we believe that there is some perfect state of bliss and happiness that we can achieve, we will keep buying junk (or taking different medications) to try reaching it. I write about this a while ago, too -
