My Indian friends were horrified when they came to Europe and saw people walking into the house with their shoes, even sitting on the bed in shoes that had just touched the street, touching money and then eating food without washing their hands etc. I think that the lower number of serious contagious diseases in Europe has given people a kind of entitled arrogance - although COVID is changing this a bit.

Unfortunately, India has a lot of big factories that are used to produce products for the West (e.g. Unilever) who dump a lot of toxic waste in their air/water thanks to a lack of regulations... I have also heard of a lot of amazing environmental restoration and protection efforts coming out of India.
