On behalf of the British, I apologise. It's the classic trick of the Colonialists - to paint the group they are trying to dominate as "backwards" or "savage". This way, people didn't need to be forced to abandon their cultures for theirs, because the shame and the desire to be "modern" was strong enough to manipulate them into changing their ways.

In most cases, it is now coming out that the so-called "backwards" people had it right all along... whether in the best ways to use the toilet, or to plant crops, use medicine, build communities etc.
